Exclusive: Gudea Lands $7M To Predict Which Online Narratives Will Go Viral

Minneapolis-based startup Gudea has secured $7 million in a seed funding round to help corporate clients forecast which online narratives are set to go viral and identify the actors steering them, the company shared exclusively with Crunchbase News.

Co-founder and CEO Keith Presley stated that Mudita Venture Partners and Silicon Road Ventures co-led the financing, lifting the startup’s total capital raised to approximately $15 million since its founding in 2023.

Gudea reports that its revenue has increased by 357% year over year. Its clientele features major artificial intelligence firms alongside businesses operating in telecommunications, retail, and entertainment, though the startup withheld specific names due to the sensitive nature of its operations.

The core premise behind Gudea is that simply monitoring hashtags and mentions provides companies with an incomplete picture. Instead, the startup maps the movement of information across various platforms, groups, and individuals to predict how far a specific narrative will travel, the exact timing of its takeoff, and when it will eventually dissipate.

Describing the business, Presley calls Gudea the “storm tracker for the internet.”

“As a meteorologist uses patterns to predict the weather, we’re using patterns to predict information,” he remarked during an interview, noting that the startup’s coverage spans more than 600 social media platforms.

From disrupting disinformation to tracking brands

The enterprise originated from the George Washington Initiative, a nonprofit that repurposed tactics previously used by the intelligence community to disrupt online Al Qaeda and ISIS networks, applying them instead to domestic information campaigns. When seeking existing software capable of mapping information pathways, the founding team found traditional social listening tools lacking.

CTO and co-founder James Thomin began developing technology specifically designed to map those pathways. A turning point arrived when the team analyzed the backlash surrounding a marketing campaign featuring actor Dylan Mulvaney and Bud Light. Presley pointed out that critics of the campaign utilized the identical information pathways that previously distributed COVID-related disinformation.

Recognizing “that these patterns were repeating, and that there was a much broader use case,” the team decided to act, he recalled.

The technology officially spun out into an independent company in 2023. Initially, its commercial focus centered on reputational risk management, assisting major corporations in spotting potentially high-impact stories prior to widespread distribution.

“We don’t need to know what we’re looking for to find it, so we can find all of those good or bad narratives before you know what keywords you should be searching for,” Presley explained.

Who’s driving the conversation?

Gudea operates partly by evaluating whether accounts or users demonstrating unusual behavior are spearheading online dialogues. It also investigates how narratives transition from obscure online communities onto mainstream platforms.

As an illustration, the startup analyzed online claims connecting Taylor Swift to Nazism coinciding with an album release.1 Georgia Paul, director of client experience at Gudea, informed Crunchbase News that this research revealed the narrative was being manipulated.

The company notes that its portfolio of work additionally encompasses instances of stock market manipulation and corporate espionage. More recently, Gudea has analyzed the impact of data center conversations on energy and AI businesses. Paul added that the technology is equally capable of highlighting positive trends that companies can leverage, alongside identifying reputational threats.

Predicting what spreads next

To analyze behavior, Gudea employs deep learning models—including graph neural networks—while utilizing large language models to generate summaries of its findings.

“Those behavior patterns are like fingerprints, and so our AI then recognizes those fingerprints, pulls it out, and then we use an LLM to summarize,” Presley stated.

The software is commercialized through offerings that include platform access, alerts, and automatically delivered reports. The automated reports were developed specifically for senior executives who are typically disinclined to log into a dedicated platform.

When identifying competitors in the narrative intelligence space, Presley cited Blackbird, Alethea, and Cyabra, while highlighting Gudea’s predictive capabilities as its unique differentiator.

Clients are informed by Gudea “how long till it goes viral, how many people will be impacted, and how long till it goes away,” he noted.

The broader mission for Gudea remains tied to its nonprofit roots: increasing transparency around the mechanisms driving online information.

“People are making real-world decisions off of what they see online, and not all of that information is authentic,” Presley observed.

The startup intends to allocate its newly secured funds toward team expansion, feature development, and broadening its coverage across different regions, languages, and platforms. At present, Gudea maintains a team of roughly 25 employees and serves 39 customers.

Mudita Venture Partners investor Buddy Foster emphasized via email that artificial intelligence is actively transforming how stories propagate online.

“Damage to a brand is now starting in the fringe parts of the internet and builds momentum before it ever reaches a headline. It’s a big problem,” he wrote. “Gudea has built a solution that has the potential to own the market and know more than just the headlines. They can really see what is coming before it’s a problem.”

Foster considers most competing market tools to be “reactive and surface-layer,” contrasting them with Gudea’s proactive nature.

“Gudea models how information moves across the internet and hundreds of platforms, so it can spot a problem before anyone knows to search for it,” he added. “Since it looks at behavior instead of content, its ability to be proactive gets better even as the internet gets more clouded.”
