United States spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) logged their initial daily outflow in over two weeks, halting a momentum-building rally that had taken cumulative flows near a record high.
Data from Farside Investors shows that the funds experienced $148.7 million in net withdrawals on Sept. 30. This brought an end to a nine-session positive streak that accumulated approximately $3.08 billion.
The downturn was primarily led by Fidelity’s FBTC, which saw $125.6 million in exits. Meanwhile, Bitwise’s BITB dropped $13.6 million and BlackRock’s IBIT lost $9.5 million, with the remaining nine funds seeing flat net flows.
Even with this dip, September wrapped up firmly in the green. The financial products pulled in roughly $2.65 billion over the course of the month, marking the second-best monthly performance of the year behind August’s $3.52 billion.
This solid September performance pushed 2026 net inflows to approximately $930 million following a prolonged period spent in negative territory earlier in the year.
Furthermore, the rebound has pushed overall cumulative flows back in the direction of past peaks. Statistics compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence indicate that the vehicles achieved a peak of about $62.8 billion in cumulative inflows on Oct. 10, 2025, before an extended phase of redemptions wiped out a large portion of those gains.
By July 13, the total drawdown from that high-water mark reached roughly $12 billion, bringing lifetime inflows down to around $50.9 billion. Subsequent buying interest has significantly shrunk that gap, lifting cumulative flows to near $57.7 billion by late September.
As a result, these investment vehicles sit approximately $5 billion away from surpassing their previous peak.
Bitcoin ETF recovery faces its first interruption
Eric Balchunas, a senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg, noted that the comeback was impressive considering the hardships Bitcoin ETFs faced during the prior 11 months.
He pointed out that capital flows rebounded to levels reminiscent of past vigor, even while Bitcoin wrestled with elevated yields and persistent pessimistic sentiment. He added that the recovery has complicated the argument for bears as prices steadily push upward.
This dynamic implies that the Sept. 30 withdrawal on its own does not definitively signal the end of the rebound. The capital exit was heavily skewed toward Fidelity’s offering, whereas the majority of the fund complex reported neutral movement.
Consequently, upcoming trading days carry greater significance. Widespread redemptions spanning BlackRock, Fidelity, and other major sponsors would signal that the recent recovery is stalling. Conversely, a return of fresh inflows would frame Tuesday’s activity merely as a temporary breather following more than $3 billion of capital deployment.
Trading near $83,800 early on Oct. 1, Bitcoin leaves ETF demand as a primary indicator of whether institutional participants are willing to expand their positions at current valuations.
The next major milestone remains clear-cut: the funds require an additional $5 billion or so in cumulative inflows to completely wipe out the drawdown stemming from last October’s peak. Whether they bridge that remaining distance depends on how swiftly buyers step back in following the reversal on the final day of September.
