Bitcoin’s $84,000 wall gets harder to break as ETF inflows sink to $31 million

Institutional interest in US Bitcoin exchange-traded funds cooled significantly on Sept. 28, generating just $31 million in net inflows as the cryptocurrency stalled beneath a significant supply barrier.

Figures from SoSoValue show that BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) spearheaded the trading day by pulling in $54.84 million. This addition of approximately 657 Bitcoin pushed its total holdings past the 800,000 BTC milestone for the initial time since May 26.

Meanwhile, Grayscale’s Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) brought in an additional $10.32 million. Conversely, Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) experienced $10.90 million in withdrawals, and Grayscale’s GBTC shed $23.19 million. All other funds reported zero net movement for the session.

While the $31.07 million net intake stretched the positive inflow streak for American spot Bitcoin ETFs to eight consecutive sessions, it simultaneously represented the weakest single day within that timeframe.

Momentum has gradually faded since Sept. 21, when daily inflows neared the $1 billion threshold. After dropping over the course of last week, daily figures plummeted to a mere $31 million on Monday, pushing the latest daily intake down by roughly 97% compared to that recent peak.

Despite this daily deceleration, the broader weekly statistics remain robust. Last week saw the funds accumulate $2.4 billion, marking their highest weekly intake of 2026 and the strongest performance since October 2025.

This massive influx successfully dragged year-to-date flows back into positive territory, recovering from a roughly $5.8 billion deficit as late as July. Furthermore, SoSoValue notes that these recent additions have driven month-to-date inflows to $2.73 billion, pushing total net inflows for 2026 to approximately $1.01 billion.

Bitcoin stalls at heavy supply zone

The tapering of ETF demand carries heavier weight now as Bitcoin fights to maintain its upward trajectory.

After pulling back from a push above $87,000 last week, Bitcoin hovered near $84,000, bringing the asset back into a price corridor where Glassnode highlights a dense concentration of long-term-holder supply.

Data from the analytics firm indicates that a greater volume of long-term-holder coins rests between the $84,000 and $85,000 range than at any alternate tier on the cost-basis distribution map. This heavy clustering could spark heightened selling pressure as investors break even or re-enter profitable territory.

Glassnode emphasizes that Bitcoin must decisively pierce this resistance zone and sustain values above it for the broader rally to persist.

Robust ETF participation previously acted as a sponge for this overhead supply throughout the September advance. According to Glassnode, these inflows fueled last week’s roughly 4% price appreciation even amidst selling pressure from perpetual-futures speculators and profit-takers.

Consequently, the shrinking volume of these daily inflows diminishes the institutional cushion available just as Bitcoin confronts this major supply cluster.

Priced near $84,000 per coin, Monday’s $31 million net inflow represents the equivalent of fewer than 400 BTC. By contrast, the nearly $1 billion that flooded the funds early last week equated to over 11,000 BTC at comparable valuations.

Although ETF intake does not map directly onto an exact volume of same-day spot market purchases, the comparison highlights a dramatic contraction in the marginal institutional bid.

This dynamic places heavy scrutiny on the upcoming trading sessions. A resurgence in ETF purchasing power could assist Bitcoin in absorbing the dense supply situated between $84,000 and $85,000, thereby clearing a path for further gains. Should inflows continue to contract or flip negative, the digital asset may find it difficult to break past the barrier that has currently halted its upward momentum.

01What caused the slowdown in US Bitcoin ETF inflows?

US Bitcoin ETFs drew only $31 million on Sept. 28, marking a 97% drop from peak daily inflows near $1 billion seen on Sept. 21. This deceleration coincides with Bitcoin stalling below a heavy supply zone between $84,000 and $85,000.

02Which fund led the inflows on Sept. 28?
