Tom Lee, Chairman of BitMine Immersion Technologies, announced that the firm will halt its Ethereum acquisitions once its portfolio hits 5% of the cryptocurrency’s total supply, bringing a definitive close to the strategy that established the company as the largest corporate holder of ETH.
Addressing attendees at TOKEN2049 in Singapore, Lee noted that BitMine is already nearing that boundary and has no intention of pursuing an indefinite buying campaign. He stated:
“We only need to get another 100,000 ETH to get to 5%.”
In practice, the enterprise is actually positioned slightly closer than Lee’s general estimate implies. As of October 4, BitMine owned 6,016,414 ETH, representing roughly 4.9% of the 122.1 million ETH supply referenced in its most recent filing.
Consequently, the firm requires approximately 88,586 ETH to secure a 5% share of the 122.1 million token supply utilized in its calculations.
Assuming a hypothetical Ethereum value of $2,500, purchasing the remaining balance would demand about $221 million. With $643 million in cash and marketable securities on its balance sheet, BitMine maintains ample reported liquidity to bridge this gap while preserving the majority of its cash reserves.
BitMine could reach its 5% ceiling within weeks
Based on its most recent official acquisition velocity, Lee’s 5% threshold appears attainable before the conclusion of the year, even should the organization moderate its buying activity.
During the week leading up to October 4, the corporation integrated 15,112 ETH into its reserves, representing its latest publicly disclosed weekly purchase. Maintaining this exact pace means securing the remaining 88,586 ETH would require roughly 5.9 weeks, pushing the milestone to approximately mid-November.
An accelerated acquisition schedule would shorten this window. Should BitMine scale its weekly purchases up to 20,000 ETH, the remaining gap could be closed in about 4.4 weeks. Conversely, a reduced rate of 10,000 ETH per week would extend the timeline to around 8.9 weeks, moving the target date into early December.
These scenarios remain mathematical projections rather than official corporate guidance. BitMine has not committed to a strict weekly purchasing calendar, and shifts in the aggregate supply of Ethereum could modify the exact token volume needed for a 5% stake.
Concurrently, indicators suggest BitMine may have progressed further than its latest official disclosure indicates.
On October 7, on-chain analytics tracker Lookonchain indicated that the organization appeared to secure an additional 12,500 ETH valued at $33.65 million via BitGo. Because BitMine has not yet integrated this transfer into an official asset update, it has been omitted from the calculations above.
Should this transaction be verified as an official acquisition, however, it would decrease the remaining supply deficit to approximately 76,086 ETH, allowing the enterprise to achieve Lee’s cap sooner than the schedule implied by its latest reported metrics.
This dynamic brings BitMine close to an operational pivot where the mechanics of its Ethereum strategy must shift. Once acquisitions are restricted by the 5% maximum, future expansion of its ETH reserves will derive increasingly from staking returns rather than ongoing open-market buying.
ETH staking takes over from accumulation
BitMine is already positioning staking as the primary vehicle for generating returns from its extensive Ethereum treasury.
As of October 4, the business had staked approximately 5.07 million ETH—accounting for nearly 84% of its total inventory—and calculated that this allocation could yield roughly $363 million in annualized revenue.
BitMine projects that staking its entire ETH portfolio could elevate annualized revenue to about $431 million, calculated using a 2.63% annualized yield. Such staking income will become crucially important once the company is no longer permitted to scale its reserves via direct market purchases.
Nevertheless, generating native ETH rewards introduces complications for Lee’s strict ceiling.
Staking payouts continuously inject new tokens into BitMine’s balance sheet. Once its total assets draw near 5% of the Ethereum supply, these rewards could inadvertently push the firm past the threshold independently of any open-market purchases.
The firm has not fully finalized how it plans to handle this surplus. Potential solutions include leaving a wider safety margin beneath the cap for acquisitions, altering the management of staking payouts, or liquidating portions of its ETH inventory when necessary to remain compliant with the limit.
Furthermore, the target itself will fluctuate alongside Ethereum’s overall supply dynamics. A circulating supply contraction would decrease the token volume BitMine can hold while remaining under the 5% mark, whereas a supply increase would expand its capacity.
Ultimately, this leaves BitMine facing a different capital-allocation dilemma as its primary buying phase draws to a close. Having spent over a year prioritizing the accumulation of ETH, upholding Lee’s cap may eventually demand active management of the tokens generated by its existing treasury.
