Japanese payment provider PayPay has integrated Binance Pay via HIVEX, allowing international travelers to spend crypto at participating stores in Japan while merchants receive Japanese yen.

Japan’s biggest payment network opens its doors for crypto via Binance Pay

On Sept. 30, Japanese payment provider PayPay integrated Binance Pay, enabling qualified international travelers to settle transactions at participating brick-and-mortar stores across Japan using their cryptocurrency holdings. Merchants are paid out in Japanese yen.

According to PayPay’s official rollout notice, the integration operates via HIVEX, a cross-border payment network. Binance users visiting the country can use the funds stored in their crypto accounts to pay for yen-priced goods, with the conversion process taking place at the time of checkout.

Binance clarifies that this capability is restricted solely to travelers who have finished its identity verification process, meaning it is off-limits to residents of Japan. The rollout blog post details this limitation, and PayPay explicitly bars Binance Japan account holders who live in the country.

Consequently, this new tourist-focused payment feature does not grant domestic exchange customers the ability to use crypto at checkout.

How visitors pay

The transaction functionality is housed directly within the Binance application. Traveling users can either present a PayPay payment code for store staff to scan or scan a participating merchant’s PayPay QR code themselves.

Because both methods draw directly from the customer’s Binance balance, the mechanism relies entirely on standard QR code checkouts rather than requiring vendors to accept digital assets directly.

Documentation on Binance’s Japan visitor FAQ explains that users can inspect the applicable exchange rate prior to transaction approval. Support is available for more than 100 different digital assets, featuring major tokens such as USDT, USDC, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and BNB.

The system converts the user’s digital currency into yen automatically, ensuring merchants collect their sales revenue in local fiat currency.

Binance notes in its FAQ that purchases and subsequent refunds are handled as separate transactions. As a result, refunded amounts may vary due to market volatility and relevant foreign-exchange spreads. Because a specific numerical spread is not disclosed, the fee framework does not guarantee fee-free currency exchanges.

Certain locations are excluded from the service, including online storefronts, specific taxis, vending machines, merchants that exclusively accept PayPay Money, select barcode-payment vendors, and retailers that do not accommodate cross-border transactions. Binance’s FAQ additionally bars businesses that mandate Japanese identity verification.

Spotting a PayPay sign does not automatically guarantee that transactions funded through Binance will succeed. Travelers must ensure they possess a qualified account and visit a vendor equipped for the cross-border service, regardless of whether they display their own code or scan the vendor’s.

For qualified tourists, the primary advantage is the ability to pay for accepted yen purchases straight out of a Binance crypto balance after checking the conversion rate.
